Japan's greatest lava flow

溶岩流の図

Sixty thousand years.
Beyond imagination
A distant story,
It's here.

Mt. Ontake eruption, a 15 km lava flow, Gifu's first "National Treasure" - the Osaka Waterfall Tour, and its rare carbonic springs,
We aim to build up Kosaka by revitalizing local resources through the promotion of the tourism industry. We will foster one more person who is grateful for the blessings of the earth and cherishes nature, and grow the "Treasures of Gifu" into "Treasures of Japan."

Lava flow

When underground magma erupts from a crater due to volcanic activity, it is called a lava flow if it flows quietly across the surface in liquid form without exploding into fragments. Depending on the properties of the magma, lava flows with low viscosity that flow easily form gentle-shaped volcanoes, while lava flows with high viscosity that flow with difficulty form dome-shaped volcanoes. The lava of Mt. Ontake has a moderate viscosity, forming the gentle slopes that are characteristic of Mt. Fuji.

Mount Ontake Kusakidani Lava Flow

Mount Ontake was formed by the accumulation of copious volcanic ejecta such as lava flows. The Kusakidani lava flow, which erupted from Mt. Marishiten about 60,000 years ago, flowed and filled the then Hyōbe valley, extending approximately 15 kilometers to the area near Ganúrate.
