Mount Ontake was designated as a national park.

On Friday, April 10, 2025, Mt. Ontake, a sacred peak straddling Gifu and Nagano Prefectures, and its surrounding areas were newly designated as "Mt. Ontake Quasi-National Park." This marks the 58th quasi-national park in Japan.

According to an announcement by the Ministry of the Environment, Mt. Ontake is a volcanic independent peak exceeding 3,000 meters in altitude, recognized for its continuously changing natural vegetation and its valuable landscape where nature and culture merge. Hida-Osaka Town is located on the western side of this national park, boasting beautiful ravines nurtured by the abundant water flowing from Mt. Ontake and over 200 waterfalls.

The Hida-Kosaka Tourism Association also greatly welcomes this designation. With the creation of the National Park, the charms of our hidden hot springs, Gobi Onsen and Shimo-jima Onsen, and our town, which has the most waterfalls in Japan, will attract even more attention, creating an excellent opportunity for hikers and nature lovers to visit.

On April 15th, a safety prayer ceremony and waterfall opening ceremony will be held at Gandate Park, raising expectations for tourism revitalization.
This year, we're welcoming even more visitors than last year as the season to fully enjoy the nature of Hida-Osaka begins.

To those visiting Hida-Kosaka, we recommend:

  • Waterfall-hopping courseA hiking tour of various waterfalls starting from Gandate Park.
  • Hot spring hopping: Natural hot spring experience to heal your mind and body at Yunoya/Shimojima Onsen and Nigoon Onsen.
  • Mountain Climbing Challenge:A magnificent panorama on the hiking trail of Mt. Ontake.

With the designation as a National Park, we promote sustainable tourism and welcome you all.

On April 10, 2026, Reiwa 8 (Friday), "Mount Ontake Quasi-National Park" will be established. | Press Release | Ministry of the Environment
